FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Riverview Farms’ milling operation is now an independent business, Artisan Milling Company (artisanmillingco.com). The new company partners and shares warehouse space with Southeast AgriSeeds, an agricultural seed business in Rome, Georgia.
Brad Swancy leads Artisan Milling and also serves as head miller after 20 years honing his craft milling corn at Riverview’s farm in Ranger, Georgia.
Expansion was the next logical step in the milling operation’s growth. The new location increases the amount of space for processing, adds freight shipping capabilities, and supported by a USDA Producer Value-Added Grant, enabled milling equipment upgrades.
Artisan Milling collaborated with New American Stone Mills – a Vermont company who built their reputation grinding wheat flour – on the fabrication of their first corn milling machine. Mr. Swancy is excited about the results. “With the new mill the grits are cleaner, the cornmeal consistency improved, and there’s less waste in the process,” he explains. A hands-on craftsman focused on the quality of the end product, he notes that he’s producing “prettier grits now, certainly prettier polenta.”
The new equipment also enables product expansion by milling other grains in addition to corn, an expansion that Swancy welcomes. Buckwheat is the first new grain to hit the mill. Artisan Milling’s buckwheat flour has a finely ground texture; Swancy is also creatively combining buckwheat and corn to create polenta taragna, a nuttier-tasting polenta traditional in Northern Italy.
The new operation also includes a roller mill used to efficiently process the corn Swancy provides to his long-term distillery customers.
All of these changes – new equipment, more space, easier receiving and shipping – have positioned Artisan Milling for growth.
Business partner Joshua Baker, General Manager of Southeast AgriSeeds, is excited about supporting Artisan Milling’s launch as a natural progression to Southeast’s product line of high-quality forages, cover crop, and specialty seed mixes for farmers and hunters. “It’s fun to watch a new business develop that has the interest of consumers in mind,” shares Baker. “Feedback so far has been overwhelmingly positive and I’m looking forward to reaching a broader audience with these products,” he adds.
Honoring their roots, Artisan Milling continues to integrate heirloom corn grown by Riverview Farms into their product mixes. But spinning the milling off into its own business was a change whose time had come. Charlotte Swancy, co-owner of Riverview shares, “We’re always hearing from customers wanting to know how they can get more of the ‘best grits they’ve ever had’ after they move away. We’re excited that those orders can now be easily filled by Brad through Artisan Milling Company.”
Customers can purchase Artisan Milling’s products online at artisanmillingco.com and at the Riverview Farms’ tents at the Freedom and Morningside Farmers Market on Saturday mornings in Atlanta. Visit Artisan’s website for a list of stores that carry Artisan Milling grains.
