Artisan Milling Company grits cornmeal polenta

For 20 years, our family has been stone-milling corn into cornmeal, polenta, and “grits even a Yankee could love” in a dedicated facility behind the blueberry bushes on our farm.

In 2025, we spun the milling business off into its own entity. Now as Artisan Milling Company, Brad (one of the Swancy brothers) is milling the same fresh grain products as always — with room to ship and expand to new and exciting types of grains he wasn’t milling before. It’s a change whose time had come.

The expansion was made possible by a USDA Value Added Producer grant. Artisan is partnered with Southeast AgriSeeds, sharing their facility in Rome Georgia. The USDA grant helped to purchase new milling equipment. The result?  Even better quality than before.

“With the new mill the grits are cleaner, the cornmeal finer, and there’s less waste in the process,” Brad explains. A hands-on craftsman focused on the quality of the end product, he notes that he’s producing “prettier grits now, certainly prettier polenta.”

Honoring their roots, Artisan Milling continues to integrate our organically grown heirloom corn into their product mixes. But spinning the milling off into its own business was a change whose time had come. Charlotte Swancy, co-owner of Riverview shares, “We’re always hearing from customers wanting to know how they can get more of the ‘best grits they’ve ever had’ after they move away. We’re excited that those orders can now be easily filled by Brad through Artisan Milling Company, no matter where they live in the US.”

Customers can purchase Artisan Milling’s products online at artisanmillingco.com and as always at the Riverview Farms’ tent at the Freedom Farmers Market and Morningside Farmers Market on Saturday mornings in Atlanta. Visit Artisan’s website for a list of stores that carry Artisan Milling grains.
